ABOUT ME

Hello and welcome.

Peter Richards is a freelance director, actor, and producer based in Santa Monica, CA.  My work as a director is wide-ranging; I’m drawn to heightened language and the classics—Shakespeare, Chekhov, O'neill—and also have extensive experience devising work with ensembles and directing contemporary plays, including multiple west coast premieres in Los Angeles, most recently BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA, by Anna Ouyang Moench, and Lucas Hnath’s A PUBLIC READING OF AN UNPRODUCED SCREENPLAY ABOUT THE DEATH OF WALT DISNEY. I love to work in non-traditional spaces: outdoors, in barns, in other raw theatrical spaces. Recent projects include a critically acclaimed productions of THE TEMPEST, performed outdoors on a saltwater farm in Maine for Opera House Arts, where I also served as Interim Artistic Director in 2018.

In addition to my theatrical work, I devote my time to the Venturous Theater Fund, a philanthropic fund that awards grants to theaters producing ambitious, risk-taking new American plays.

I hold an MFA in acting from the American Repertory Theater Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University, and a BA in Social Studies from Harvard College.
